Winter 2004
Welcome to the winter issue of Avenues. The Pine Street Foundation
has had an incredible year, making significant strides in support of
cancer survivors. Highlights from the past twelve months include:
LAUNCHING Avenues, our quarterly newsletter.
With information about our own original clinical research and analyses,
the hugely popular Becoming Your Own Advocate series, and many
other innovative features, our newsletter has become a useful resource
to thousands of patients, oncologists, and other health care practitioners
every quarter. Click here for more
on developing our newsletter.
DEVELOPING our website, PineStreetFoundation.org.
This site allows users from all over the world to learn about our organization,
benefit from our research, download full copies of our newsletter for
free, and more.
COMPLETING our research on Canine
Scent Detection of Cancer. This past summer, we completed a study
where we trained dogs to detect cancer in exhaled breath samples. We
found high diagnostic accuracy in breast and lung cancers, for both
early and late stage disease. This remarkable study is currently undergoing
rigorous peer review and has generated a considerable amount of national
and international attention. Click
here for more on this study.
BEGINNING the landmark Pine
Street Foundation Survival Study. In collaboration with Kaiser
Permanente, the Northern California Cancer Center, and UC Berkeley,
this research project is addressing the question of whether complementary
and alternative medical therapy in combination with standard treatments
can help extend survival in people with breast, lung, and colon cancers.
By using data about these patients gathered over a ten-year period,
this study is exploring the potential benefits associated with long-term
use of an herbal-vitamin combination protocol. Click
here for more on this study.
FINALIZING meta-analyses on lung and liver cancers.
We have systematically reviewed all known clinical trials on the use
of Chinese herbal medicine in combination with standard therapy for these
cancers and are now analyzing the final results. Our findings are about
to be submitted to a major peer-reviewed medical journal. Click
here for more on this research.
GETTING the word out about our work, including features
on CNN's American Morning, the New York Times, the San Francisco
Chronicle Magazine, the Marin Independent Journal, and many others.
All of these accomplishments were made possible by your generous support.
Please help continue to make the Pine Street Foundation’s important
research and educational programs possible by making
a donation today. Click here for more
details on how you can make a difference.
On behalf of the entire board, thank you
for helping us advance the field of integrative medicine and provide
essential support to thousands of cancer survivors every year.
Best wishes,
Michael Broffman, LAc
