Letter from the Board

Spring 2004

Welcome to the first Avenues of 2004. Last year was a tremendous year for the Pine Street Foundation and we want to thank all of you for your invaluable and generous support; we couldn't have done it without you.

This year promises to be even more exciting and ambitious. We're planning on:

PUBLISHING the results of our work on Canine Scent Detection of Cancer in a major medical journal.

APPLYING FOR GRANT FUNDING to launch new studies that expand on this work, and other new projects:

· Canine Scent Detection For Early Diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer in Developing Countries:A Randomized Controlled Diagnostic Trial. (In collaboration with Professor Tadeusz Jezierski, Polish Academy of Sciences.)

· Canine Scent Detection For Early Diagnosis of Lung Cancer in Developing Countries:A Randomized Controlled Diagnostic Trial. (In collaboration with Professor Tadeusz Jezierski, Polish Academy of Sciences.)

· Chinese Herbal Medicine and Chemotherapy for Lung Cancer: A Randomized Controlled Trial. (In collaboration with Alan Kramer, MD, San Francisco Oncology, and Ben Pfeifer, MD, Aeskulap Clinic, Switzerland.)

DEVELOPING our Institutional Review Board (IRB), an internal ethics board that oversees and governs all of the Pine Street Foundation's research as well as helps evaluate human research subjects' concerns for other complementary and alternative medicine researchers.

As we continue to work on these and many other projects this spring, this issue of Avenues is focused on research trials and results that we found intriguing and wanted to share with you. These include new clinical trials that are currently recruiting patients and new research abstracts.

This issue of Avenues also includes the next article in our Becoming Your Own Advocate series, "How to Communicate with your Doctor." Here we explore the recent literature on the subject, show why improving doctor-patient communications is important, and offer specific strategies and sample questions that you can use in your next medical consultation.

Also in this Avenues is an article about the upcoming Sixth Annual Chinese Medical Health Screening that will take place on Saturday, April 17th, at the Marin Civic Center Exhibit Hall in San Rafael, California. We are honored that the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services will be co-sponsoring this public service event.

Lastly, a sincere thank you to Jason Chen, our former Executive Director, who helped us re-envision our organization and refine our vision and direction. Jason will now be serving as our liaison to Taiwan where he will be developing relationships with various hospitals and institutions there that will form the basis for future research collaborations; we look forward to broadening the Pine Street Foundation's presence in Asia with Jason's help.

We hope you'll continue to follow our progress and support our teams efforts throughout the coming year.

Best wishes,

Michael Broffman, LAc
Michael McCulloch, LAc, MPH
