Welcome to the winter issue of Avenues, our last in 2006!

The Pine Street Foundation has had an incredible year, making significant strides in support of people with cancer. Among our various accomplishments from the past twelve months, we published two major research papers: Canine Scent Detection of Lung and Breast Cancers in Integrative Cancer Therapies and Chinese Herbal Medicine and Chemotherapy for Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Both of these research projects were made possible because of the financial support of people like you. We are incredibly grateful to have so much community support of our mission.

In this issue of Avenues, we bring you two very important articles:

MAKING THE BEST OF A HOSPITAL EXPERIENCE
When a visit to a hospital is necessary, knowing what to expect, who to contact, and how to ask questions can be immensely beneficial. In this next article in our continuing Becoming Your Own Advocate series, author Sandra Boeschen writes how "with a little preparation, an inpatient or outpatient visit can be the healing event you need." HIGH INTENSITY FOCUSED ULTRASOUND (HIFU)
High Intensity Focused Ultrasound is a promising new technology for the treatment of solid tumors. Using sound waves focused at a point to create heat (much in the way light can be focused with a magnifying glass), HIFU is a non-invasive technique that is successfully being used on a variety of different cancers. In this article, we discuss how HIFU works, what sorts of patients it's appropriate for, and where it's currently being performed. Click here for more.
